Kerry Blue Terriers - History

Ireland is the mother country of Kerry Blue Terriers. These dogs were bred there to perform various functions. One of the most versatile and affectionate terriers, the Kerry Blue Terrier, also called the Irish Blue Terrier, was used by hunters and in households. Hunters made use of the breed's agility and intelligence. Excellent hunting instincts allowed the dog to make a good retriever. The breed is said to be a land and water retriever. In fact, the Kerry Blue Terrier was of great help on farms. It helped to get rid of vermin. Moreover, this wonderful dog displayed herding skills. The Kerry Blue Terrier was often seen herding sheep and cattle.

Despite numerous talents, The Kerry Blue Terrier did not set the Thames on fire. The breed was unknown in most countries till the 20th century. No sooner than in the 1920s did the Kerry Blue Terrier acquire acknowledgement and start to be used as a companion. Though physical qualities and protection instincts allow the breed to be used as a police dog, the Kerry Blue Terrier remains mainly a companion.

In fact, Kerry Blue Terriers are one of the most striking breeds. The AKC recognized the breed in 1924. It started to be promoted by breeders and those who fell in love with this agile dog of a blue shade. According to the AKC statistics, the Kerry Blue Terrier has a medium popularity. Yet, Kerry Blue Terriers are valued highly for their appealing appearance and amiable personality.
